The State of Amharic NLP

Amharic is the working language of the federal government of Ethiopia, and NLP literature categorizes it as “low-resource.”

1. What “Low-Resource” Means

Amharic text exists across news portals, Telegram channels, government gazettes, and liturgical archives. The deficit is in curation:

  1. Supervised Corpora: Machine translation needs aligned parallel text, Named Entity Recognition (NER) needs annotated spans, and conversational alignment needs question-answer pairs. Most Amharic web text is unaligned and uncleaned.
  2. Orthographic Noise: Historical phonological mergers leave web text spelled inconsistently across homophones (ሀ/ሐ/ኀ/ኸ, ሰ/ሠ, አ/ዐ, ጸ/ፀ), which fragments subword tokenizer vocabularies.
  3. Speech Alignments: Publicly available Amharic speech datasets are small.

The Ge’ez Abugida

Ethiopic is an abugida (alphasyllabary), where each base glyph represents a consonant-vowel syllable. The inventory runs past 300 characters, including:

  • 33 primary consonants across 7 vocalic orders (231 core syllographs).
  • Labiovelar diphthongs (such as ኰ, ኈ, ጐ, ቈ) and labialized variants (ሏ, ሟ, ሯ, ቋ).
  • Numeral ciphers (፩ through ፼) and punctuation marks (፡, ።, ፣, ፤).

Characters carry no capitalization, so NER cannot use case to distinguish common nouns from proper names (e.g., ሰላም as “peace” vs. the personal name Selam).

Agglutination & Templatic Morphology

Amharic combines Semitic root-and-pattern morphology with agglutinative affixation. A single orthographic word can encode a clause:

Orthographic Word: ስላልተሰባበራችሁም (səlal-täsäbabbəraččəhum)
Literal Meaning: "Also because you were not shattered / broken into pieces"

Decomposition Breakdown:
ስለ- (səle-) Conjunction prefix ("because / since")
  -አል- (-al-) Negative particle ("not")
-ተሰባበር- (-täsäbabbär-) Passive frequentative stem of triliteral root ሰ-ብ-ር (s-b-r)
-አችሁ (-aččəhu) 2nd person plural subject marker ("you [pl.]")
-ም (-m) Concessive / negative coordinating enclitic ("also / either")

Whitespace-delimited word tokens leave words like this Out-of-Vocabulary. Processing them takes subword Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) or morphological segmentation.

Head-Final SOV Syntax

Unlike English, Spanish, or Swahili (Subject-Verb-Object), Amharic is head-final Subject-Object-Verb (SOV):

$$\text{ተማሪው (S) } + \text{መጽሐፉን (O) } + \text{አነበበ (V)።}$$

Dependent clauses and adverbial modifiers push the main verb to the end of long sentences, so machine translation models must keep cross-attention across long token spans.
